Herbs to cure male and female infertility

Infertility is a common issue causing much concern for younger generation today. Ayurveda has certain set methods and principles for treatment of infertility.
Infertility is more than just the inability to conceive among couples. It also includes women who can conceive, but are unable to carry pregnancy to full term due to repeated mis-carriages.

Male infertility

Although both men and women have equal role to play in child birth, the Ayurvedic concept of infertility in men focuses on abnormalities in sperm, penile disfunction, deficiency in seminal fluid, and issues pertaining to senility and old age. Male infertility may also occur due to various medical reasons, including presence of urinary diseases.
Herbs for men: At present there are several medications advised for male infertility. Some of the well-known herbs that help in curing male infertility are jeevaka, kakoli, shatavari and ashwagandha, all of which, help in rectifying some of the above mentioned conditions. Kokilaksha and vidarikanda, specifically help in improving quantity of seminal fluid.
Ayurveda also considers treatment with Kapikacchu to increase sperm count. It is also considered to prevent male sterility and acts as nervine tonic.
Gokshura helps in increasing androgen levels and improves blood flow into the penis. The other herbs used to enhance male fertility levels in Ayurveda are Bala, and Salammisri. While Bala is used in cases of general debility and sexual inadequacy, Salammisri serves as a good nutritional supplement and aphrodisiac.

Female infertility

Ayurveda associates female infertility to issues such as tubular blocks, salpingitis, obesity, pelvic inflammatory diseases, uterine fibroids, obesity, and vaginitis.
Herbs for women: For infertility among women, Ayurveda suggests herbs like iodhra, aloe vera, ashoka shatavari, as they help regulate hormone levels and improve fertility. Ayurvedic experts also sometimes recommend Ashwagandha, roasted in butter and boiled with cow’s milk and sugar, which is advised to women on certain days of her menstrual cycle.
Ashoka helps in stimulating endometrium and ovarian tissue. Lodhra increases reproductive hormone levels such as FSH (Follicular Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinising Hormone). Shatavari brings in an oestrogenic effect on the female mammary gland and genital organs, and is used in treating infertility, threatened miscarriage, and leukorrhoea. Kumari (Aloe) is used in in-vitro production of oestradiol, while progesterone levels by ovarian cells may be considerably boosted.
Foods rich in rice, wheat, milk, eggs, ghee, black gram, almonds, pumpkin seeds, pomegranate, seaweed, grapes, red clover blossoms, raspberry leaves, flaxseed oil and nourishing soups are thought to be best for boosting fertility.
Lifestyle modifications:
A warm gentle oil massage can be given in clockwise motion on the abdomen daily, followed by a warm shower. This will help provide additional support to female reproductive organs.
Cleansing the digestive system will help improve digestive functioning. This can be done months before attempting to conceive. Cleansing involves including light meals comprising seasoned vegetables, soups and fruits all through the day.
Incorporate meditation into daily routine at least once a day and establish regular daily routine including regular meal times and bed times. Yoga is an integral part of Ayurvedic daily routine, as it helps improve circulation. Relax and avoid factors contributing to stress, in order to improve fertility rates. (by

Strawberries, pomegranates defy aging and prevent major ailments

( Eating strawberries and pomegranates regularly can keep aging at bay, while also preventing several deadly diseases including cancer, according to latest study.
According to researchers, the fruits, being high in antioxidants, helps combat the effects of oxidative stress, lessening effects of aging, and the chances of contracting diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart diseases.
Researchers from Marche Polytechnic University in Italy and University of Granada in Spain, for their study, fed healthy volunteers with half a kilo of strawberries for a two-week period. Blood samples were collected from volunteers at four, eight, twelve and sixteen day intervals and a month later.
The results showed that eating fruits such as strawberries that are high in antioxidants can prevent red blood cells undergoing haemolysis.
The Study Author, Dr. Maurizio Battino, says that certain varieties of strawberries make erythrocytes more resistant to oxidative stress. This could be of immense help considering the fact that oxidative stress leads to serious diseases.
Pomegranate is another antioxidant-rich fruit, and one of the few plants that comprise a range of phytochemicals with antioxidant properties, but different in chemical makeup. In fact, the antioxidant levels in Pomegranate, is three times the amount in green tea or red wine. Pomegranate contains catechins, flavonoids, anthocyanins and gallocatechins, whereas majority of other plant-based sources contain only one group of antioxidants. Pomegranate seeds are also an excellent source of dietary fibre, carbohydrates and unsaturated fatty acids.
The chemical combination in pomegranate is said to reduce cell damage, and will potentially kill cancer cells. Antioxidants help by destroying free radicals in the body, which are associated with a range of diseases including cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Free radicals are also responsible for hastening aging process.
Several laboratory and clinical studies suggests that pomegranate juice may have severe positive impact on several conditions including those linked to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, like reducing thickening of arteries, increasing blood flow, and plays a vital role in improvement of erectile dysfunction.
Apart from this, it has been lately proven that pomegranate has the ability to slow down the progression of certain cancers, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. In a study at the University of California, the researchers asked 50 men with prostate cancer to have half a glass of pomegranate juice daily, and kept track of the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels of these men. PSA is a protein which is widely linked to prostate cancer. The PSA levels of the patients who drank the juice did not rise for an average of 54 months (usually the PSA levels of a cancer patient doubles in about 15 months).
What’s more, while keeping such deadly diseases at bay, the high antioxidant levels of these fruits also help in maintaining that youthful glow when taken regularly. Having said this, why not try to include them as part of daily diet and enjoy the immense benefits that these fruits have to offer? (by

Indulge in citrus fruits to curb chronic inflammation, improve immunity

( Anti-oxidants found in citrus fruits can help curb chronic inflammation, one of the leading factors in major health issues like cancer and heart diseases, says the latest study from Journal of Nutrition.
According to researchers, women with diet packed with high anti-oxidant rich citrus fruits had lower levels of certain inflammation markers.
For the study, scientists studied the eating habits of nearly 1600 women, and found that women with highest intake of citrus-fruit antioxidants, including flavanoids, had lower levels of the inflammatory chemical interleukin-8. It was also discovered that higher intake of grapefruit is associated with lower levels of the C-reactive protein (a marker for inflammation).
The flavanoids that are otherwise found in citrus fruits include naringenin, a compound found in regulating metabolism, which also protects the body against obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. The compound naringenin, is also thought to keep cholesterol under check and prevent insulin resistance.
Citrus fruits are the most popular kind of fruits, and it has been long considered to have the natural ability to promote immunity and boost overall wellbeing. All citrus fruits are packed with Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), which is primarily essential for prevention of Scurvy. The Vitamin C content in citrus fruits is vital for healthy teeth, detoxification of blood stream, good absorption of iron by the body, and for lowering likelihood of high blood pressure, heart diseases and cancer, and for boosting the immune system.
Although Orange is the most common and popular citrus fruit in the world, there are several other citrus fruits that have immense health benefits including lemon, tangerine, mandarin, Clementine, grapefruit, tangelo, pummel, Satsuma, Minneola, and Ugli.
Apart from just enjoying them as fruits, the essential oils extracted from citrus fruits have been of immense help in the field of aromatherapy. This is particularly due to the specific aroma that citrus fruits exhibit, and its corresponding effect on the body.
Irrespective of the citrus essential oil used, the vitamin C content of citrus oils help in eliminating free radicals, restoring firmness and suppleness of skin, and reversing signs of aging. The chemical compounds found in citrus essential oils have been scientifically proven to lower blood cholesterol levels, detoxify liver and balance the sugar content in blood. The acidic content of the citrus essential oil helps in cleansing and eliminating blockages in the intestine, while the great aroma of citrus essential oils help in invigorating one’s senses, acting as great mood stabilizers.
On the whole, sufficient amount of vitamin c is vital for proper functioning of human body, and no more evidence is required to prove this fact! (by

Asparagus, garlic in daily diet helps shed weight & control diabetes

( Including food like asparagus, artichokes and garlic in daily diet, can help shed excess weight, while also helping to keep blood sugar levels under control, revealed a recent study.
Researchers have noticed that a diet rich in fermentable carbohydrates such as garlic, asparagus and artichokes can suppress hunger, while also helping the body in regulating blood sugar levels.
The reason behind this could be because these foods prompt the release of gut hormones that reduce appetite. They enhance the sensitivity to insulin, thereby leading to better glucose control.
A Dietician at Imperial College, London, Nicola Guess, also the study lead, said on investigating the appetite and glucose level control in people with Type 2 Diabetes, it is hoped that there will be a way out to prevent its onset
Therefore, if the study has been successful, it can be determined if such fermentable carbohydrates can form an effective and affordable health intervention, to reduce an individual’s risk of developing diabetes.
Currently, the Charity Diabetes UK is funding research into the health benefits of such foods. If found effective, the finding could be used as treatment for obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
An earlier study by the Leicester University had revealed that eating green leafy vegetables, including Broccoli, kale, spinach, cabbage and sprouts, on daily basis can cut the risk of Type 2 diabetes. (by

Immense benefits of Hydrotherapy (Water Therapy)

( Since ages numerous diseases have been treated by Water. Ancient Egyptians, Roman and Greek Civilizations too depended on water for routine treatments. Ancient Egyptian royalty bathed with essential oils and flowers immersed in water. The use of water as a therapeutic agent was revived during the 19th century.
Hydrotherapy (Water Therapy) is the oldest, safest, and most inexpensive way to treat common ailments. Hydrotherapy makes use of physical properties of water for treatment. They buoyancy of water helps reduce the effect of gravity, thereby utilizing less energy for performing movements. Hence, people suffering from painful joints or muscles, can perform simple exercises more easily in water than outside. Apart from this, the hydrostatic pressure of water promotes better blood circulation imparting a sense of well being. This, when performed in warm water (wherein the pool is at a temperature of about 34 degree centigrade), further increases the benefit.
Another unique property of water is that resistance to any movement increases with the speed of movement. This aspect is particularly beneficial for strengthening of muscles. Water, being nature’s healer, has beneficial effects on the skin and muscles. It calms the internal organs and the endocrine system, and stimulates nerve reflexes on the spinal cord. While heat quiets and soothes the body, cold stimulates and rejuvenates the body.
Studies conducted at Mayo Clinic revealed that soaking in a hot bath provides immense health benefits that are otherwise obtained through exercise, with less strain on the heart. Soaking in a hot bath increases the heart rate, and lowers blood pressure, just as when doing other exercises.
Numerous researchers now, are of the opinion that patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can safely exercise by following tailor-made water exercises. Water therapeutically massages joints every movement. It helps increase aerobic capacity, overall activity levels, and muscle strength in rheumatoid arthritic patients.
Hydrotherapy is also beneficial in treating several musculoskeletal and neurological ailments such as neck pain, back pain, sports injury, arthritis, head injury, spasticity, stroke and paralysis. It also helps in post surgery rehabilitation. It can also be used as a mode of exercise during pre and post deliver, for weight reduction and for relaxation purposes.
There are several forms of Hydrotherapy, one of which is, Submersive hydrotherapy. This involves submerging all parts of the body in water or in a pool or tank and may involve use of various types of equipment, with or without whirling water. These techniques are now adopted in several spas. (by

A solution to the much troubled Urinary Incontinence

( Accidental or involuntary loss of urine or the inability to restrain urinary voiding is referred to as “Urinary Incontinence”.
In such cases, the bladder is unable to hold urine for such a time, so that it could be released voluntarily. Though incontinence is not considered a disease by itself, it could signify a symptom of other problems, too. This problem has been found to affect more women than men.
Though current medications and therapies do not have a direct solution to help such women with overactive bladders, acupuncture has proved success in dealing with this problem.
Researchers at the Oregon Health and Science University subjected seventy four women with problem of incontinence to acupuncture treatment. They were given acupuncture either in placebo points or the points known to control the functioning of the bladder. This was done once a week for four consecutive weeks.
On completion of the treatment, it was found that women who received the treatment were 30% less likely to visit bathroom in urgency, when compared to the placebo group that showed 3% decrease. Apart from decrease in distress and incontinence episodes, the women experienced an increase in bladder capacity.
Researchers say that the improvements shown in women with acupuncture treatment were equivalent to that offered by behaviour therapies and drugs. (by

Natural supplements for treating allergies

( Here are a few scientifically studied natural/ complementary remedies to treat allergies.
Vitamin C: Recent studies have suggested that Vitamin C is effective in treating allergies, as it lowers histamine levels in the bloodstream. Hence, eating plenty of citrus fruits and juices, berries, broccoli, dark greens, onions, berries, and mangoes could prevent on-set of allergies. However, people who have an allergic reaction to certain fresh fruits may have to be more careful.
Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) : Various studies conducted in Switzerland which were peer-reviewed by medical journals have revealed the supplements derived from Butterbur, reduces symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in most patients. Hardly any side effects have been reported.
Acupuncture: This involves placing needles onto specific points in the skin. The procedure relieves symptoms of hay fever.
Quercetin: The supplements of this antioxidant are found in plenty in yellow onions. Studies have revealed that this supplement blocks allergy causing substances. It can be used alone or in combination with allergy medications.
Chinese Skullcap: This is a herb with high level of antioxidants. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties. Along with use of Chinese Skullcap, a Chinese herbal formula, ‘bimminne’, helps in treating hay fever.
However, it should be noted that few natural substances may even inhibit histamine release. Although this may appear to be good for patients suffering from allergies, lowering histamine release completely may also prove dangerous. At times, these supplements, when taken along with prescription medication that inhibits histamines, the combo could cause trouble.
Hence, to be on the safer side, it is best to openly discuss with the doctor all that you are taking for allergies. (by

Honey – an excellent cure for child cough

( A teaspoon of honey taken at bedtime could bring in relief for children suffering from severe cough, suggests a new study.
The finding is based on reports of the children’s symptoms recorded after they were subjected to various treatments, and the researchers concluded that honey proved to be far better than a cough medicine.
The research report that was published in ‘Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine’ detailed the study conducted by a group of researchers, who carried out their study on 105 children with upper respiratory infections from a clinic in Pennsylvania. The parents of the children were given a paper bag that contained a dosage device. While some where empty, some had age-appropriate dosage of honey-flavoured cough medicine, containing dextromethorphan. The others had similar dosage of honey.
The parents were enquired about the children’s sleep pattern and cough symptoms before and after bedtime treatment. The symptoms were rated on a seven-point scale.
The paediatricians who read the study said they would advise parents seeking alternative medicines to try honey. However, they cautioned that children below one year of age should not be given honey due to the rare, but serious risk of botulism.
The researchers stated that the benefits of honey could be due to its anti-oxidants and microbe-fighting effects. But the dark variety of honey is better than the buckwheat honey, due to its richness in antioxidants.
The researchers concluded that a teaspoon of honey before bed helps in calming children’s cough, and helped them sleep better. (by

Natural alternative to contemporary arthritis medications

( Recent university-based research has found a new natural alternative for arthritis treatment. The research, conducted by The Australian Center for Complementary Medicine Education and Research (ACCMER), reveals that SeatonTM Green Lipped Mussel Extract has the property to slow down the progression of Osteoarthritis.
The Green Lipped Mussel Extract (GLM) is an edible shellfish which is commonly found in the waters of New Zealand, and is a major diet of population in New Zealand. Studies conducted by the American Research Programme confirmed the potential of the marine mollusc in treatment of arthritis. This was followed by series of clinical trials, which found GLM to be effective in relieving symptoms association with arthritis.
SeatonTM Green Lipped Mussel Extract is a product that is manufactured by Healtheries of New Zealand. During the research conducted by ACCMER, the bio-chemical properties of the product were studied, so as to determine whether the product has the required activities for an effective anti-arthritic agent.
The study was supported by the historical records of the usefulness of the product for treatment of osteoarthritis. It was discovered that SeatonTM has a range of activities that are potentially useful for arthritic treatment, and was also a good anti-inflammatory agent. As opposed to other contemporary arthritis drugs, it was found to reduce the chances of formation of blood clots, and also helped in removing the clots that continue to form.
This indicates that apart from producing symptomatic relief from the condition, SeatonTM can be expected to slow down the progression of the disease. However, just as is the case with other complimentary medicines it may take several weeks before the results become evident, but once proven, it is likely to have multiple-beneficial effects.
Complementary medicines usually provide multiple benefits while also reducing negative effects considerably, and hence they are the preferred first line treatments among patients, particularly for conditions such as arthritis.
Currently, Seatone is sold in more than 30 countries and has helped several thousands across the world. (by

Simple home remedies for sunburn and glowing complexion

( Frequent exposure to the sun increases production of melanin (the skin’s pigment that gives color to the skin). Melanin helps protect the skin from sun’s radiation. As melanin is dark in color, the skin becomes dark in color, or tanned on sun-exposure. Apart from tanning, the skin is also exposed to harmful ultraviolet radiation that leaves a long-term damage on the skin.
Hence, it is important to avoid direct sun-exposure as much as possible, particularly during noon till about 3pm. Hence, the skin needs to be protected from effects of sun-exposure through daily care routine that helps in tackling these effects. Also, remember to apply sunscreen while swimming, of while holidaying by the sea, as water, being a reflective surface, increases the effects of UV radiation.
Here are a few simple easy-to-follow home remedies for sunburn:
A scrub is often the first thing to set your hands upon after sun exposure, as it effectively removes immediate tan. But scrubs should be avoided in cases of redness or rash. After using the scrub, milk can help soothe the skin.
  • 3 tablespoons of ground meals can be mixed with half a cup of yogurt. Apply on face and neck. Rub it gently all over face and neck and wash off.
  • Mix two teaspoons of oatmeal with half a cup of ripe papaya and add a drop of honey. Apply the mask and wash off after twenty minutes.
  • Honey and lime juice can be mixed in the ration of 2:1 and wash it off after twenty minutes.
  • A pinch of turmeric can be added to yogurt and applied over face, neck and arms regularly for half-an-hour.
  • Lime juice and cucumber could be mixed in equal proportions and applied regularly for 20 minutes. Cucumber pulp together with yogurt can also be applied over face regularly and washed off.
For lightening skin tone:
  • Mix a teaspoon each of milk powder, honey and lemon juice with half-a-teaspoon of almond oil. Apply regularly on face and wash off after 10 to 15 minutes. This apart from removing tan brings shine back on skin.
  • Oatmeal, curd and tomato juice to be mixed and applied on face. Leave on for 20 minutes before washing off with cold water. This helps remove tan while also lightening the skin.
  • A mixture of grated tomato together with 2-3 drops of lime juice, could be left on the face for 20 minutes prior to washing off. This could be done for 15-20 minutes twice a day for two weeks for best results.
  • A tbsp of gram flour should be mixed with 2 tsp of raw milk and 2-3 drops of lime juice. Apply this mixture and leave on for 15 minutes and wash off. Repeat for a month, and follow-up with once a week.
  • Apply a paste of freshly ground mint leaves and leave on for about 20 minutes. Wash with cold water. Continue the routine for 15 days.
  • Soak 4 almonds overnight. Grind it into a fine paste with milk. Apply on neck and face, leave it overnight. Wash with cold water in the morning. Continue this routine for two weeks, and twice a week thereafter. (by

Asthma treatment in Ayurveda

( Due to today’s modern urbanized lifestyles, excessive pollution and rapid industrialization the number of patients suffering from [tag]Asthma[/tag] is fast increasing. Reports suggest that at least 15% of Indian population and 10% of U.S. population suffer from Bronchial Asthma every year. These days more and more of such patients are turning towards [tag]Ayurveda remedies[/tag], due to the holistic approach followed by [tag]Ayurveda[/tag] wherein apart from treating the disease without any side effects, measures are taken to find the root cause of the disease and prevent it.
Asthma is referred to as “Swas Roga” in Ayurveda. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the kapha dosha combines with ‘pranavayu’ leading to obstruction in the respiratory passage (called ‘pranavaha srotasa’ in Ayurveda) causing a condition called as ‘Swas Roga’ or “Asthma”.
There are various non-allergic and allergic factors that cause Asthma like diet, excessive exposure to smoke and dust, working in excessive cold or hot temperatures, over-exercising, emotional tensions, other disorders in lungs or throat or hereditary factors.
A few Ayurvedic remedies and home preventive tips are mentioned here:
  1. A few common medicines as suggested in Ayurveda are [tag]Sitopaladi choorna[/tag], Vasavleha, Swaskuthar ras etc. During Asthma attacks, “[tag]Rasayana Chikitsa[/tag]” is given to the patient. It is also advised that Asthmatic patients can go in for a [tag]Panchakarma[/tag], especially vaman chikitsa before the onset of monsoon.
  2. Honey is one of the most effective remedies used for [tag]treatment of Asthma[/tag]. During bouts of Astma, just holding a jug of honey beneath the nose and inhaling the air in contact with honey helps in easier breathing and provides temporary relief from Asthma. When consumed internally with equal parts of dates, black resins and pippali, it acts as a good lung tonic by thinning out the accumulated mucus and eliminating it from the respiratory system.
  3. When five grams of Indian gooseberry or Amla is mixed with one table spoon of honey and consumed, it acts as an expectorant, and is an effective medicine for Asthma.
  4. During Asthmatic attacks, [tag]massaging[/tag] mustard oil with camphor over the chest will loosen the mucus and help easy breathing. Simultaneously, inhaling steam with a few caraway seeds added to boiling water will help in dilation of bronchial passage. (by

Herbal / Ayurvedic treatment for Cervical Spondylosis

( What is Cervical Spondylosis?
Spondylosis is a spinal degeneration or deformity of joints of two or more vertebrae, which occurs with aging. Cervical Spondylosis is the common degeneration of cervical spine that affects the vertebral bodies and inter-vertebral disks of the neck and the nerve roots or spinal cord of the spinal canal. Spondylosis often advances with age and increases at multiple interspaces. In ayurveda the condition is known as ‘Griva Sandhigata Vata’.
Causes of Cervical Spondylosis
Age – Cervical Spondylosis is often associated with age. While only less than 25% of people below 40 years of age experience Cervical Spondylosis, about 60% or more above the age of 40 are affected by it.
Neck injury – A neck injury which may have occurred years back can predispose to Spondylosis. Other precipitating factors such as incorrect body posture, trauma, and excessive intake of sour food (according to ayurveda), can trigger spondylitis attacks.
Genetics – Although the role of genetics is yet to be confirmed, people with above 50 years of age who experience the condition, are more likely to have a sibling with normal or mild conditions of Cervical Spondylosis.
Work Activity – Cervical Spondylosis is often found among people who carry heavy loads on their head or shoulders, than those who do not.
Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis
Common symptoms include pain in the neck which later radiates to arms or shoulder, weakness on the legs and arms, stiffness in the neck region, numbness of arms, legs or shoulders, loss of balance, headaches (on the back of the head), muscle spasms, loss of control over bladder or bowel movements, and general tiredness and anxiety.
Herbal / Ayurvedic treatment for Cervical Spondylosis
  • Ayurvedic / herbal oils such as Mahanarayana taila can be applied on the affected part and gently massaged twice or thrice a day. Avoid violent massage applying deep pressure, which may do more harm than good. During winter season, this oil could be gently warmed before application.
  • Ayurveda recommends the gum resin extract from the Guggulu plant as best cure for the condition, and this compound, known as Simbananda Guggulu, is given in capsule form four times a day. As the medicine has a laxative effect, the dosage of the medicine will be decided based on the bowel movement of the patient. This should be determined on consultation with an Ayurvedic Physician.
  • The herb ‘Triphala’ in its powdered form (about a teaspoon) can be mixed in a glass of warm milk and given to the patient. The dosage and duration of intake to be decided by a physician and may vary based on individual requirements of the patient.
  • Hot fomentation on the vertebrae of neck, would be helpful for relief from cervical pain. Add 500gms of salt on a big cloth, and place this on a frying pan until it gets heated up. This can then be applied on the neck (but, it should not be so hot as to cause burns). This can be done for half-an-hour a day, and ensure that the affected part is not exposed to cold wind just after hot fomentation.
  • Avoid foods with sour taste, and other fried foods, but, bitter variety of vegetables such as neem flowers, drumstick, and bittergourd are recommended to be a part of diet of such patients.
  • Exposure to cold, such as cold bathe, violent neck muscle exercise, wrong posture while reading or writing or working, should be avoided. Wear a scarf around the neck when going out of the house. (by

Stevia (honey plant) herb brings new ray of hope for diabetics

( A tiny herb, just about three feet in height, now brings a new ray of hope for diabetics, as it is said to be a major source of bio-sweetener for the rapidly growing food market.
The herb, ‘Stevia’, better known as the honey plant, is a native of Paraguay, and has the potential to develop as a major source of bio-sweetener in the market, but, despite the potential of the herb, it is yet to be exploited for commercial use. Since ages, Stevia leaves have been used by Guarani Indians in Paraguay as a soothing tonic for stomach ailments and as a healing concentrate when cooked in water.
Stevia is cultivated in several parts of Karnataka including, Bangalore, Chitradurga, Kolar, Tumkur, Chikmagalur, Dharwad, Davanagere, and Bellary, due to favorable climatic conditions in these places.
Being a good sugar substitute, Stevia is good for those on a diet-plan. It is a zero-calorie sweetener and is carbohydrate-free regulates blood sugar levels, and hence is considered ideal for diabetics. Apart from this, it stimulates the release of insulin and regulates the response to glucose, particularly, in cases of type 2 diabetes and hence, is considered to be a far healthier option than other artificial sweeteners.
Studies have revealed that Stevia is a natural, anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent. It has also shown promising results in tackling high blood pressure. Steviosides, the intensely sweet glycosides, produced within the leaves make the extract of this herb is about 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. Research has indicated that as the body does not digest or metabolize these intensely sweet glycosides, they are not converted into glucose in the body and hence have a glycemic index of zero. Therefore, Stevia is a valuable sweetening source for patients with sugar restrictions and hypoglycemia.
Other health benefits of Stevia:
Stevia is believed to be of immense help in treating obesity, as it contains zero calories, and reduces craving for sweet and fatty food. Preliminary research says that stevia can reset the hunger mechanism in people, as it has the ability to clear the communication pathway between stomach and brain, thereby reducing huger sensations faster.
Stevia curbs growth of oral bacteria and such other infectious organisms. Regular use of Stevia as a mouthwash helps improve problem of bleeding gums. As stevia has the potential to inhibit growth of oral bacteria, there are generally lower cases of colds and flu among stevia users. (by
On topical application, Stevia extracts have therapeutic effect on acne, dermatitis, eczema and seborrhea. When placed directly on cuts and wounds, it has shown rapid healing without scarring.

Acupuncture may reduce negative effects of Head and Neck Cancer treatment

( The unpleasant negative effects of treatment for head and neck cancer patients may be relieved by Acupuncture, the ancient Chinese practice.
A recent study found that there was significant reduction in both dry mouth and pain and shoulder dysfunction after neck dissection in patients who received acupuncture.
However, further studies are required to support the potential role of acupuncture, said Dr. David Pfister, the Chief of the Head and Neck Medical Oncology Service, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.
Neck dissection (removal of the lymph node and surrounding tissue) is a common treatment for head and neck cancers. The dissection could even be severe, involving removal of all lymph nodes, and muscles involved in turning the head, or removal of a nerve or vein that helps patients to lift their arms above their head.
Side effects could vary based on the extent of the procedure. Pain and shoulder dysfunction are common following a neck resection. Although anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to address pain and dysfunction, postoperative radiation could lead to dry mouth, and several other symptoms.
For the study, Out of 70 patients, acupuncture sessions for four weeks were administered at random, while the others were given the usual care involving physical therapy exercises and anti-inflammatory pain relievers.
About 40 percent of participants receiving acupuncture, showed improvements in pain and mobility, as against a mere 7 percent in the usual care group. Also, it was found that there was a considerable decrease in dry mouth. About five people in the acupuncture group showed improvements, as against none in the usual care group. (by

Binge on mushrooms and remain slim

( Eating mushrooms in large quantities will help prevent obesity, suggests new study. Now, keeping in mind that obesity is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and several types of cancer, this comes as good news to many of us, aged 20 and above, who are obese.
The study, led by Dr. Cheskin, Director of John Hopkins Weight Management Center, suggests that increasing the intake of low-energy density foods, particularly mushrooms, in place of high-energy foods such as ground beef, is an effective way of preventing and treating obesity.
The participants in the study were randomly chosen to receive either mushroom or beef lunch entrees for four days. The subjects they switched entrees to consume the other ingredient (mushroom or beef) the next week. Obviously, the calorie intakes were considerably higher during meat meals than during mushroom meals, a distance which averaged 420 calories and 30 more fat grams per day over the four-day test period.
The subject ratings for palatability, satiation, appetite and satiety did not differ between groups. But the most interesting part was that the subjects seemed to accept mushrooms as a palatable and more suitable culinary substitute for meat. They did not compensate for the low calorie mushroom meal by eating more food later during the day.
Based on the preliminary findings, Dr.Cheskin and team, concluded that men who substitute 4 ounce Portabella mushroom in place of a 4 ounce grilled hamburger, each time they ate a grilled hamburger, during the course of the year, and did not change anything else, could save about 18000 calories and 3000 grams of fat. Herbal cures to combat fatigue

( Fatigue caused by excess work or lack of sleep is one of the most common kinds of fatigue. Caffeine, in its many forms has been the treatment of choice, for such a condition since ages.
Coffee is the strongest natural form of caffeine. However, coffee is addictive and drinking more than three cups a day could lead to problems such as jangled nerves and diarrhea.
Other sources of caffeine include colas, tea, cocoa, and South-American beverages such as yerba mate. Although tea has comparatively lesser caffeine, it contains more of Theophylline, which in its pure form, is used to treat Asthma. Like caffeine, it causes nervousness, insomnia and increased heart rate.
However, in cases of stress-induced fatigue, which could lead to loss of sleep at night an exhaustion during the day, folk practitioners prescribe variety of herbal relaxants, including valerian and lavender.
Black Tea: A cup of black tea contains about 30mg of caffeine. About two doses (60mg) of this tea act as a stimulant increasing activity of central nervous system. The tea can be prepared by pouring a cup of boiling water over one and a half teaspoon of black tea leaves. Allow it to steep for five minutes. Strain and drink.
Valerian: It is a sleeping aid which has been in use for more than 2000 years now, and has been helpful in treating stress-induced fatigue. Pour one cup of boiling water to ½ to 1 teaspoon of minced fresh roots, or mix a few drops of valerian extract or tincture into a glass of warm water. This makes a good bedtime tea. However, it is not advisable to be used for longer than two weeks.
Lavender: The herb has been well-known as a calmative. The dried flowers or an extract of the herb can be added to warm bath water, just prior to bed time. The oil too can be dabbed on to the temples before bedtime. (by

Dandruff remedies

( According to Ayurvedic principle, the condition of one’s hair reflects the constitution of the individual. For instance, an individual with Vata constitution will have coarse, dry and dark hair that are prone to dandruff and split ends, while Pitta constitution individuals have light brown hair that is prone to premature greying, and appears silky, while individuals with Kapha constitution have thick, shiny and wavy hair. The health of hair is dependent mainly on two factors; lifestyle and diet. Deficiency of vitamins, illness, poor diet, dandruff etc., will lead to dull hair and hair loss.
According to Ayurveda, this is caused due to aggravation of Vata. A few easy and simple tips for dandruff prevention are:
  • A teaspoon of camphor can be added to neem oil or coconut oil, and massaged into the scalp at bed time.
  • One teaspoon each of coconut, mustard and castor oil can be mixed and massaged into the scalp.
  • One part of lemon juice can be added to two parts of coconut oil and massaged into the scalp.
These can be washed after three to four hours or left overnight. (by

Honey works wonders in improving eyesight too!

( Although all of us are well aware of all the medicinal values and beauty care that honey bestows for human body, it has been recently learnt that honey works magic for eyes, by protecting eyes and improving eyesight.
Although the easiest manner to take advantage of honey is to include it as part of one’s regular diet, Perry Kharpuri, a Shillong-based researcher, advices a mix of two teaspoons of honey with carrot juice, which, on regular consumption, improves eye sight and cures watery eyes. This is believed to be an excellent remedy for people working for long hours before the computer.
Also, Amla (Indian gooseberry), taken with honey, apart from improving eye sight helps in treatment of conjunctivitis and glaucoma, reducing intraocular tension in an effective manner.
When suffering from cold, cough or chest congestion, add two teaspoons of honey with an equal quantity of ginger juice, and consume often. This although, one of the oldest, is also one of the most popular remedies followed by millions of Indians.
Another honey remedy is to add a spoon of fresh honey to juice of half a lemon in a glass of lukewarm water, as a cure for hyperacidity, obesity and constipation.
Homeopath, Swapan Debnath, agrees that honey also helps in controlling BP. Two teaspoons of honey, when mixed with a teaspoon of garlic juice, and consumed regularly, helps tackle the problem to a certain extent.
As per research conducted by Madeep Kaur of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Samrala, Punjab, a mixture of honey, ginger juice and black pepper powder mixed in equal quantities and consumed thrice a day, helps relieve symptoms of Asthma.
In short, consuming one teaspoon of honey a day helps lead a long healthy life, states Madeep Kaur in her report.
However, a work of caution to be followed is that honey should not be heated or exposed to high temperature. Also honey should never be taken with hot and spicy food and fermented beverages such as rum, brandy or whisky, as the nectar of various flowers included in honey, could get its poisonous properties enhanced when mixed with hot and spicy foods, which could at times prove to be fatal. Soothe Sinusitis the ayurvedic way

Taking a deep breath through the nose may seem relaxing. However, most of us never think about our sinuses when doing so. But, for others, these tiny air passages are a source of stuffy nose and headaches, associated with fever and infection, which, in serious cases may last up to twelve weeks at a frequency of four times a year.
As per the ayurvedic approach, Sinus problems are caused due to underlying imbalance in Prana Vata (the sub-dosha of vata that govern the head, brain and mind) and Shleshaka Kapha (sub-dosha that governs moisture and lubrication balance).
The imbalance of these two sub-doshas results in another complication. Ama, the sticky waste-product after digestion, gets mixed with Shleshaka Kapha in the sinus area, resulting in an even more toxic and sticky mucus called Shleshma, which settles in the area, clogging the sinuse channels. Due to this restriction, there is an imbalance of Pitta, and this leads to inflammation.
Air pollution, lifestyle pattern, alternating between hot and cold weather, consuming excess amounts of cold, heavy or sweet foods, lack of sleep, insufficient exercise, could all further aggravate the imbalance.
Here are suggestions from Ayurveda that could be followed for effective relief from Sinus problems:
  • Follow a diet that pacifies Prana Vata and Shleshaka Kapha, and follow a Vata-Kapha pacifying diet. The foods consumed should not be too hot or too cold. Avoid ice-cold foods and beverages. The foods consumed should be warm, light, nurturing and easily digestible.
  • A combination of spices such as turmeric (2 parts), cumin (4 parts), coriander (4 parts), fennel (4 parts), ginger (1 part) and black pepper (1 part), could be roasted and then ground into a powder. The ground spices could be sprinkled on to vegetables or grains, or added to your soup and consumed.
  • Steam inhalations performed by adding eucalyptus oil, garlic, cough drops or other medicinal herbs to boiling water will help reduce sinus headaches.
  • Drinking plenty of water, flavored with spices, will de-tox the sinuses and purify them. Boil two quarts of water. Add two leaves of basil, two thin slices of ginger, four mint leaves, two pieces of clove and quarter-teaspoon of marshmallow root. Drink this combination, all through the day.
  • Eat plenty of organic fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid banana, eggplant, bell pepper, tomato, as these clog the channels.Avoid skipping or delaying meals as this will upset digestive balance and cause formation of toxins.
  • Regularize bowel movements, as this helps detoxify the body, apart from re-establishing a balanced environment in sinus area.
  • Other herbal supplements such as the ‘Protection Plus - Sinus’, could be taken on consultation with a physician, as it helps maintain sinus health and boosts resistance to infection, apart from reducing inflammation.

Treating Arthritis with Ayurveda

(Avataraline) Arthritis is a medical condition wherein the patient suffers from joint pain, caused mostly due to damage to the joints. This condition is now increasingly common among youngsters too, as is the case with the elderly.
Arthritis is of different kinds, the most common being osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease). Although treatment for arthritis is available in allopathy and homeopathy and other systems of medicine, in recent times, however, ayurveda is gaining immense popularity in treatment of arthritis.
Ayurveda offers several alternatives for arthritis treatment. Several studies lately in the United States, India and other places have confirmed Ayurvedic treatment as the means to natural arthritic pain relief.
According to Ayurveda, Arthritis can be caused by aggravation of vata (air) dosha, and due to excessive collection of ama (toxic substance due to improper digestion) in the body. When ama begins to increase in quantity, it begins to get accumulated in the weaker areas of the body, and an aggravation of vata happens, resulting in arthritis.
Ayurveda believes that every individual is unique, and therefore, although the outer symptoms may be similar, the path to their healing differs. This implies that the remedy for arthritis pain and suffering is different for each individual.
Ayurveda believes that arthritis could be due to excess accumulation of vata, pitta or kapha in the body. Therefore, determining the exact type of arthritis with the help of a physician, and taking specific treatment will offer effective relief.
Vata-type Arthritis
If your arthritis is caused due to vata, your joints could crack and pop and become dry, but may not appear swollen. Apart from general treatment, vata-type arthritis responds well to three-to-five-day detoxification diet and an anti-vata diet.
General recommendations for this type of arthritis are:
  • Yogaraj guggulu tablet could be taken thrice a day, as it cleanses bone tissue, improves bone strength and flexibility.
  • Half or one teaspoons of Haritaki with warm water is recommended.
  • You could also apply mahanaran oil on affected joint, following it up with local moist heat application. Else, after massaging with the oil, you could soak your foot in hot water. Even triphala or castor oil can help in colon cleansing.
  • Practising certain yoga postures, including forward bend, Maha Mudra, chest-knee pose and half-bridge pose may be helpful.
Pitta-type Arthritis
This type of arthritis is characterized by inflammation, with the joint getting swollen and painful even without movement. It may also appear red in colour and may be hot to touch. This type of arthritis responds well to a one-week detoxification diet and anti-Pitta diet.
Some specific herbs recommended for pitta-type arthritis are guggul, aloe, sandalwood, chaparral and saffron.
  • Applying ice-pack on the inflamed part is also recommended.
  • Ayurveda suggests taking 1 tablet (350mg) of kaishore guggulu thrice a day, massaging with Brahmi and sandalwood oils, and herbs such as nirgundi and musta for pain relief. External application of cool castor oil or coconut oil to the painful area is recommended, applying sandalwood powder paste on affected area by mixing one teaspoon of sandalwood powder and adding sufficient water to make a paste and rubbing it onto the joint.
  • Further yoga postures such as bow pose, boat pose, locust pose, cow pose, camel pose and moon salutation is recommended.
Kapha-type Arthritis
In this type of arthritis, the joint gets stiff and swollen, but feels cold and clammy rather than hot. A little movement may tend to relieve the pain in this case. This type of pain responds to a one or two week detoxification diet (light, dry and warm food).
  • Ayurveda recommends pure guggul (Punarnava guggulu tablets 250mg one tab thrice a day), application of a paste of vacha (calamus root) powder to the joint, make a paste of punarnava powder and ginger powder (mix 1 teaspoon each with warm water to make a paste) and apply on the joint), hot herbs including dry ginger, cinnamon, trikatu and turmeric. Even Musta and nirgundi can help relieve pain.
  • Specific yoga postures include triangle pose, forward bend, spinal twist, and tree pose.
In general, ayurveda attempts to remove ama from the joint and bring it back to the colon, and eliminate it. In case, you are not aware about the kind of arthritis (vata, pitta or kapha), take a teaspoon of triphala added to ½ or one cup of warm water.
If you know positively the type of Arthritis, Haritaki is used for vata-type arthritis, amalaki is used for pitta-type arthritis, and bibbitaki is used for kapha-type arthritis.
Diet: The three to five-day detoxification diet is recommended with vegetables, juices, spices and herbs taken on an empty stomach. Enemas and colon cleansing are also done to detoxify the body.
Oil: Several essential oils are applied externally to help the body get rid of toxins, while also relieving pain and improving mobility. Mahanarayan oil, when mixed with sesame oil (1:1) helps improve flexibility, muscle fatigue and stiffness and helps relieve pain. The oil breaks blockages and begins to heal locally. After application of oil, warm heat, yoga, bath or mild exercise improves the condition.
Heat Therapy: The patient may be required to sit in a sauna, or should have steam applied directly on the affected area.
Cold Therapy: Cold Therapy involves using cold packs, soaking in cold water, ice massage, or over-the- counter sprays and heating salve that can cool the joints and skin.
Herbs and Spices: Ayurveda also uses several herbs and spices externally and internally when treating arthritis. It is hoped to cleanse the body and relive pain and stiffness. Golden seal, mint, ephedra, nirgundi, gentian, eucalyptus leaves, quassia, scute, coptis, phellodendrom, aloe, Siberian gingseng, guggul, du huo, myrhh, lugusticum and yucca are few such herbs used for treatment.
Similarly, Chamomila (useful when patient gets restless), turmeric (excellent anti-inflammatory properties and mild painkiller and strengthens connective tissues between joints), Ginger (anti-inflammatory agent), nettle (helps in elimination of waste from kidneys), boswellia (used as natural anti-inflammatory), and devil’s claw (good anti-inflammatory herb for joint and muscular problems) are few other good herbs recommended for arthritis.
Latest research news: The American college of Rheumatology that conducted a trial on 90 people with osteoarthritis. The study showed that 50percent of them took a combination of turmeric, ginger, and ashwagandha and they reported considerable improvement in pain relief and mobility. This is, in contrast to just 20percent of the placebo group that reported arthritis pain relief. Further, the use of same anti-inflammatory herbs offered considerable improvement in pain relief, stiffness and severity of swollen joints and brought about improvement in ability to function among 182 people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Apart from all this, walking, bicycling, controlling weight, relaxation therapy, yoga and meditation to alleviate stress, reducing caffeine intake, occasional fasting, and quitting smoking are other lifestyle measures to be adopted by arthritic patients.
So, with ayurveda offering these many alternatives, it is no wonder that people are turning more towards ayurveda for arthritic cure. (by
